A350 Melksham Bypass – Second Public Consultation

Wiltshire Council is currently exploring the potential case for a new bypass to take the A350 around Melksham, and is seeking the views of residents, businesses and other stakeholders on the progress so far, and the various proposed route options.

Between November 2020 and January 2021, we held a non-statutory public consultation to gather feedback on our longlist of options for the scheme. The consultation received 1,018 online responses and 175 letter and email submissions.

Since the first consultation, further assessment work has been carried out in line with government guidance. This is a staged process and at each stage we’ve progressively applied more detailed evidence and analysis to inform decision making. Alongside feedback from the public and local stakeholders, we’ve been able to identify a single emerging option for a full Eastern bypass supported by complementary walking and cycling measures. We are now seeking your views on the emerging option.

It remains a long standing priority for the council to improve north-south connectivity along the A350, but to also recognise the important local function that the existing route serves at Melksham, and issues such as journey time delays and poor reliability, accidents, severance and noise and air quality.

We have a dedicated webpage that contains an online questionnaire for the second consultation. The web page also has further background information regarding the project: www.wiltshire.gov.uk/highways-a350-melksham-bypass

This consultation aims to:

  • Engage with stakeholders affected by or interested in the scheme
  • Engage with potentially affected landowners
  • Encourage involvement from stakeholders and build strong open relationships
  • Raise awareness of the scheme and understanding for the need to improve the A350
  • Inform about the single emerging option identified
  • Understand stakeholder concerns, issues and suggestions
  • Receive feedback on the single emerging option to allow us to develop the scheme further
  • Prepare for the statutory consultation phases.

This consultation provides the opportunity to gather additional information on the scheme and its potential effects and help identify mitigation measures where required. We would encourage you to access the information provided, and to engage with us by providing your comments, views and suggestions through the online questionnaire.

The survey will be open between 23 June to the 8 August 2021 – this is not a statutory consultation. If the scheme progresses, statutory consultation will follow in due course.

Kind regards

The KC Cup Logo Competition winner is Carol Clarke.  Unfortunately there will be no tea and cakes in the hall this year to hand over the cup (and the engraving will have to wait as I'm sure that Colbourne Trophies is not an essential service!)

A350 Melksham bypass - public consultation now open

Wiltshire Council are exploring the options available to improve the A350 at Melksham including the potential for a new bypass around Melksham, and are seeking the views of residents, businesses and other stakeholders on our progress so far, and the various route options.

You can find much more information about the proposals - including the route options - on this page and in the downloadable PDFs on the link to the website below but it is important to stress that at this stage, the council are seeking feedback on the early stages of the scheme - this is not a statutory consultation. Covid-19 Update
Great Hinton – Social Events vs COVID-19

COVID-19 has made a significant impact on everyone’s lives in a variety of ways and will continue to do so for some time. One of the overarching consequences has been the need to curtail any events that require people to be closer than 2 metres from each other, touching objects and then passing them on, catering, use of common facilities; all activities that heighten the risk of person to person transmission of the COVID-19 virus and would demand an extensive and costly disinfecting and cleaning process on completion.

It is believed that, to date, no one in the Village has contracted COVID-19, we would wish that to remain the case. Therefore, in light of the Government’s sensible directive that social gatherings must be conducted outdoors and in small groups – limited to family and close friends – and the additional risk of a second wave in the autumn, the Community Committee has agreed that all currently planned and advertised events should be cancelled. This includes the 3 social clubs – Indoor Bowls, Lunch Club and Craft Club – which will all remain suspended until it is safe and sensible for them to restart.

Rest assured that your Community Committee is ready to quickly organise social events again as soon as it is safe, sensible and legal to do so; events “on ice” are Skittles, Quiz Night and Horse Racing to name but a few; but we are open to all and any suggestions for events.

Graham Holmes
Chair, Great Hinton Community Committee

Before these strange times began, it had been planned to hold the Trust's annual meeting on either the 7th or 14th of this month. This is the meeting to which all residents are invited. Obviously, the meeting has been postponed to a date to be decided after restrictions have been eased. (The Trust's constitution requires the annual meeting to be held in April "or as soon as practicable thereafter".)

The Trust's annual meeting is normally followed by the annual meeting of the Community Committee. I understand this too has been postponed.

In the meantime, Andy and Graham hope that annual reports for the Trust and the Community Cmte respectively will be published next month.

The Great Hinton Social Committee has decided in light of the currently Covid-19 epidemic that it would be prudent to cancel some social events, details of which can be found on the revised Social Calendar

The National and local medical advice is that the epidemic will reach a maximum infection rate during the April to June time frame; coupled with this, Great Hinton has a significant number of people in the ‘high risk’ category, many of whom are loyal event attendees, and we would not wish to place them in an increased danger of contracting the virus or having to forgo attending an event. It is hoped that the epidemic will have started to subside by the middle / end of June to allow the annual fete to be held; however, this will be reviewed in June.
In addition to these events, it may also be necessary to delay the Annual General Meeting until later in the year; further information will be published once a firm decision has been made.

In addition, the various Social Clubs are independently reviewing if it would be wise to continue holding their meetings; members of each Club should contact the Club lead / organiser to obtain more information. Thank you for you understanding and I would redraw your attention to the very useful advice the Parish Council recently put out regards Covid-19.

May 2020

VE Day

Our Plans to hold a street party for the whole village in Peppercorn Orchard were scuppered but true to form villagers got into the spirit and several houses were decorated with flags to celebrate on 8th May. Many of us had our own tea party in our gardens, so all was not forgotten!

January 2020

Burns Night - 25th January 2020
22 villagers enjoyed Burns Night supper in the village hall. We dined on Cullen Skink, Haggis and Clapshot with a wee tot of whisky, and finished with Cranachan.

Shona gave the Address to the Haggis without managing to stab herself with the knife, followed by Nick's 'toast to the lassies' and Catherine's reply with a poem about Jean Armour (Robbie Burn's wife).

Music and Mirth - Wednesday 15th January

On the 15th January we welcomed a group called 'Music and Mirth', who are a part of Devizes Musical Theatre, to Great Hinton Ladies Club.

Partners were invited and we were entertained for about 45 minutes by these wonderful singers.

John Craig insisted that we join in on some of the choruses.  Hopefully he was not too put out by our lack of singing ability!

We then enjoyed a selection of 'lite bites' provided by our members.  A thoroughly good evening was had by all.

Pub Olympics

27 friends and neighbours enjoyed another session of Pub Olympics on 11th January.

We played darts, skittles, shove ha'penny, dominoes and table skittles.  All without too many infringements of the rules! The best at shove ha'penny was Graham; best domino player was Peter; table skittles was won by Joe; Graham and Steve held top place at skittles and Beryl totally surprised herself with the highest score in darts on her 1st round (she didn’t do as well the next time!).

The winning team was 'The Red Devils' purely on the throw of a dart as they scored equal points with 'The Black Peppers'.  The losing team had decided that the nearest to the bulls eye would be the winners.

(the photos are not of the winners, simply ones taken during the evening)

Hopefully you will all be back again next time to defend your titles!

KC Cup 2019 - Four Seasons Photographic Competition

In November the KC Cup was presented to Kirste for her set of four seasons photos which featured her dog as a central theme.  Chloe Scott was a very close second.  The entries were judged by Colin Waldeck from Seend who worked as a cameraman for the BBC for many years.  He was impressed by the standard of all the entries and had a hard time deciding between the two winners.

Christmas Charity Donations

Thank you to all who donated. The total raised from the Carol Concert, Christmas Card donations and the raffles at our 2 Christmas meals at the Lamb is £345.03
I will be sending a cheque in the New Year for £260 to The Friends of Trowbridge Museum and one of £86 will go to the village hall trust towards the upkeep of the hall.

Celebrating 50 years of Great Hinton Ladies Club

On October 5th, 20 current members and 9 past members of Great Hinton Ladies Club celebrated their Golden Anniversary with a lunch in the hall. 4 founder members were present - Audrey Plummer, Diane Norris, Val Austin and Jill Wickham. Jill came all the way from Cornwall just for the day, Eloise came form Derbyshire and Helen from the Isle of Wight.

As usual our members provided a splendid spread for all to enjoy.
